Who are our kids?

Zen enjoys playing his trombone!

We know that instrumental music can quickly and easily become an expensive hobby.  Our mission is to make music possible for all kids.

Our belief is that being involved in band and orchestra does more than just teach kids to play an instrument and read music.  We feel it creates a positive outlet, channels kids into a productive learning environment, helps kids form connections with friends who have similar interests, and allows kids to have the experience of being both a team player and the confidence to perform on their own.

On top of these beliefs, statistics show that young musicians consistently out perform non-musicians on dexterity and non-musical academic tests.

And of course…. IT’S FUN!!!

Although I played the trombone from 5th grade through my senior year at Blue Hill Community School, you would think that I would have been good, and you would be wrong. I started band with the hopes of having talent but as the time went on the talent never came. But there are a lot of memories I have with friends and classmates that I would not have had any other way. Band taught me an appreciation of music and the different parts, melodies and lines that I still use today as I work with the sound system at church. They don’t let me perform…remember the lack of talent thing!  But having watched Matthew play all the way through school and have a passion for what he was doing in band gives me the desire to help others that have the same desire to play...

Growing up I played clarinet in my high school band.  Playing was not something I continued after graduation and I really never gave it much thought again until my daughter, Kara Boerger-Alexander, chose to play flute in Gretna’s band program.  In order to support her, I got involved and made sure I attended every concert, competition, and volunteered to assist on trips.  It was through this participation that I began to realize how important music can be in a young persons life.  The band students were a close group and the experiences were fun and positive...

I have no band experience but I took some piano lessons as a girl and still really enjoy music, especially live music.  I regularly attend school band concerts in the area even though I have an “empty nest”. I am amazed at the talent and abilities the band instructors draw out of the students.  Through Matt’s Music Memorial the opportunity, benefits, and enjoyment of instrumental music can be available to even more students.  That excites me!  My primary roll with the foundation is bookkeeping and records keeping, but if you have any questions or would like more information you can always contact me.

Music has always been a passion of mine. My flute, piccolo, and I were active participants in the Gretna instrumental band program for eight years before I graduated in 2004. I still love to play when I have the time. In addition to this, band will always have a special place in my heart because it is where I met my husband Matthew.  This foundation is my new passion, and I thoroughly enjoy the joy and positive life experiences that we are able to give our kids through it. I am now a full-time student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha which gives me the flexibility to be the main point of contact for all of you! If you need anything, want to donate, or just want to say hi, please don’t hesitate to call anytime!
